We have helped to build up extra editions for our neighbors, and some of our citizens have had their naujesand pictures printed away from home. There was once a business guide of Brevard to hang on the walls in public [)laces, but we doubt if one of these could now be found in Bre vard. It was simply paying out money which went away from home without any material bene fit to our town or count^^ It is our intention to make the extra edition of the Sylvan | of the county- Valley News a distinctly home I in the matter? atfair. We wish to include in our write-ups the successful farmers of the county—with engravings of their homes; the officials of the county from justices in the vari ous townships ‘“down” to high sheriff, with pictures of each; vic'ws of the public buildings, j In the recent past we hav(> schools, churches, etc.; the re-! made s ;veral appeals to our citi iiiai'kably attractive mountain jzens tha^ they see that our road.'- scenery, waterfalls, etc., which | are put and kept in good condi surrourd us—in fact to include | tion and it does seem as if the ap in our extra edition the thousand ; i>eal fell on deaf and unapioreci ative ears. The matter was brought to our attention in most vivid manner last Monday on the train by hearing a wealthy I man. w’ho owns a home in oui midst say that he was not goin« to spend the winter here as the roads were too bad and that ht could not enjoy driving after Christmas. Now he did not say own cojivenience but for the fur ther purpose of attracting winter visitors. Good roads are no longer a luxury but a necessity, and the section that refuses to I uild them will soon be a back number and its people will be poverty stricken and far behind their neighbors in all respect?. Build gjiod roads and we can snap our fingers at hard times and poor crops for we will then, and not until then, alwa3’S have a large crop of winter guests and that is our most paying crop of all. Tne plan sug gested and approved by all pres ent is to rent a room in one of the brick buildings, put in a heater, have shelves made for the ac com modation of the books already on hand and make arrangement to have the library 0[)en once or twice a week at stated hours with a suitable person in charge as librarian who will not only distribute the books but will keep the room open as a reading ro m during such hours as sh_ 11 be de cided upon. To start the work on even this simple scale will require )j^75 o) jj^lOO. Nine dollars has been giv en and about i75 books donated. In a short time each citizen wil be approached by a committee and asked to contribute some thing toward raising the neces sary sum. It is most earnestly desired that the committee be met with encouragement and substantial support. After the Library is once established tht current expenses can be met by the payment of nominal dues by the subscribers. This happens to be the only case up to the present where any one has come right out and told their reason for nots{)ending the winter in this county but we feel sure that the bad condition ol our roads has caused many to leave who would have gladly spent the winter in our midst. Not only are we glad to have wealthy and cultivated people among us for the pleasure of their congenial society but we also look at it from an economic standpoint and we see where many dollars that should and would be spent here are going to other sections that have good roads. What we have said so far applies only to the strang3rs in our midst and if we should at tempt to point out the great and manifold disadvantages and pos itive losses that we suffer our selves it would fill the entire paper. It is our earnest hope that the people of Transylvania will soon awaken to the necessity of hav ing good roads, not only for their Board of Aldermen Meet. The Board of Aldermen held their regular monthly meeting 1 ist Monday morning. The Board authorized W. E. Breese, jr.. chief fire department, to have a suitable tower built for the fire alarm, and they also authorized the town treasurer to return to all members of the fire company their poll taxes for each year if they had sei’ved for one year previous to May 31st.
